An Unforgettable Train Journey: Lessons in Respect, Authority, and Unexpected Turns

The Start of an Eventful Journey

My return trip from Mumbai to Delhi on the Rajdhani Express on January 9th began ordinarily enough. Having selected an upper berth in compartment B10 by mistake, I boarded the train, unaware of the memorable events that lay ahead. Dressed casually in a T-shirt, cap, and sportswear, I often find myself mistaken for a photographer or media person.

Encounters with Fellow Passengers

The compartment was lively with a group of chatty Marathi passengers. Following an intuition, I stored my trolley on my berth, a decision that would later prove significant. Shortly after, a man claiming to be a Delhi Police constable took his seat nearby, followed by a lady who took the middle berth, seat number 5.

An Unexpected Confrontation

As the journey progressed, everyone settled into their activities until an unexpected altercation broke the calm. The lady, a Wing Commander in the Indian Air Force, demanded to sleep in her middle berth, disrupting the quiet of the compartment. Her outburst led to a heated exchange with the constable and, surprisingly, involved me despite my silence.

The Situation Escalates

The situation escalated quickly, with the lady involving the train ticket examiner (TTE) and eventually bringing railway police into the matter. Her demeanor and insistence on sleeping in her berth during daytime hours, contrary to railway norms, created an uncomfortable atmosphere.

Revelations and a Turn of Events

In the midst of this chaos, I revealed my own identity as someone deployed at the CBI Anti-Corruption Branch, on leave. This revelation changed the dynamics entirely. Suddenly, I was viewed with newfound respect and authority by everyone, including the constable and the railway police.

A Shift in Perception and Treatment

Post-revelation, the attitude of everyone on board shifted. The once-casual Marathi passengers now addressed me with formal respect, and the train staff offered me exceptional service. This royal treatment, while flattering, was also a reminder of the power of perceptions and titles.

Reflecting on Timeless Lessons

This entire episode was a profound lesson in respect, patience, and understanding. It reminded me of the wise words of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on the importance of politeness and composure. The incident highlighted how quickly situations can change based on perceived authority and how important it is to treat everyone with respect, regardless of their position.

Concluding Thoughts on an Unforgettable Trip

As the train journeyed towards Delhi, I pondered the events of the day. This trip was not just a physical journey but also an insightful expedition into human behavior and societal norms. It underscored the age-old adage that one never truly knows who they are interacting with and the importance of treating each individual with dignity and respect.
